July 2021 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Happy Juneteenth America! June 19, or Juneteenth, marks a notable and meaningful day. It is now a national holiday that not only acknowledges the end of American slavery, but also celebrates the advancements of the Black community and our continued commitment to diversity, inclusion, and racial equality.

I would like to graciously thank you for supporting Emancipation Park’s 149th Juneteenth Celebration. Because of you and so many others like you, the Conservancy can continue to impact the lives of families in the Greater Houston community. We greatly appreciate your assistance in making our annual Juneteenth celebration a successful event year after year.  If you missed any of Emancipation Park Conservancy's virtual activities, no worries. You can witness the entire 149th Juneteenth celebration by watching videos included in our Juneteenth recap section.

We are gearing up for Emancipation Park's 150th Annual Juneteenth Celebration. Your tax-deductible donation will help us kick-off and plan an extraordinary celebration that the founding community would be proud to see and experience.

Please enjoy the following “THANK YOU” message from Mrs. Jacqueline Bostic, Vice-Chairman of Emancipation Park Conservancy's Board, Chairman of Emancipation Park's Juneteenth celebrations, and great-grand daughter of Rev. John Henry “Jack” Yates, one of the park founders. We cannot wait to commemorate the holiday with you next year in-person at Emancipation Park. The 150th Juneteenth celebration will be even more amazing now that Juneteenth is a federal holiday.

Thank you so much!

Lucy Bremond, Executive Director

Powering Progress Together with Shell

Emancipation Park's 149th Annual Juneteenth Celebration presented by Shell kicked off with an educational panel discussion. Shell provided a robust dialogue with young, diverse energy professionals about their innovative careers, and how “Powering Progress Together” helps advance societies objectives towards a cleaner, sustainable future.

Social Justice, Reform, and Community

Replay this highly anticipated panel discussion surrounding policing in minority communities and how to improve relationships, especially in African American neighborhoods. The panelists included Chief Troy Finner, Houston Police Department; Dr. Melanye Price, inaugural director of The Ruth J. Simmons Center for Race and Justice at Prairie View University; Dr. Howard Henderson, founding director of the Center for Justice Research at Texas Southern University; Dr. Dameion Crook, founding principal of Mickey Leland College Preparatory for Young Men and moderator, KPRC 2 News Anchor, Khambrel Marshall.

Small Business Level Up and Pivot

We hosted a live discussion on Zoom with Houston Sauce Pit, Crumbville, Emancipation Economic Development Council (EEDC), and webinar sponsor Cadence Bank surrounding small businesses best practice for success during this unprecedented time. The discussion focused on how these two thriving businesses have pivoted during the pandemic and general practices businesses should consider for long term success including business credit, setup and paperwork, and brand reputation.

Church and the Community: Exploring the Role of Black Clergy

For centuries, black churches have stood as the center of the community, acting as pillars and lighthouses that echo the voice of the people. Replay this great discussion to hear from five Third Ward pastors who share their experiences and testimonies per the purpose and meaning of the church in Black culture, past and present. Moderated by Emancipation Park Conservancy's very own Iris Garcia, learn more about the vital role the black church plays in assisting with economic, financial, and mental health resources to the community.

Juneteenth Tradition: Meal Distribution

Bar-b-que, watermelon, and red soda are traditional items that are always included as part of Juneteenth celebrations to make the day even more special and memorable. Emancipation Park Conservancy (EPC) was thrilled to offer 2000 meals to the community as part of its meal distribution for the Juneteenth holiday. EPC partnered with Lucille’s 1913 to provide the bar-b-que, H-E-B for various items, Coca-Cola for the red soda, Houston Food Bank provided watermelon and boxes of groceries, and Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz provided PPE items and water. The distribution happened at Emancipation Park and was open to the public, registration was required.

Juneteenth Story Jam

Enjoy shining star scholars of Houston’s historic Third Ward elementary schools Beatrice Mayes Institute, Blackshear Elementary, Thompson Elementary, and Yellowstone Academy as we continue to make literacy a significant part of all communities. Watch this fun and educational segment as these future leaders read “Juneteenth Jamboree,” a spirited and beautifully illustrated story by African American author, Carole Boston Weatherford. Emancipation Park Conservancy’s African American Read-In Bookmark Program, sponsored by Baker Hughes, encourages all students to read together, focusing on African American books and authors.
