August 2020 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

As the executive director of Emancipation Park Conservancy, my job duties include telling the story of the Juneteenth journey that led to the purchase of the historic Emancipation Park in 1872 and the role that we play in preserving the park’s rich history.  It is a story with memories of progress, setbacks, hopes and dreams. In the midst of COVID-19, the untimely death of Houston’s native George Floyd and the international recognition of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Emancipation Park Conservancy team created the #WEAREJUNETEENTH (#WAJ) campaign. It provided an opportunity for anyone in the world to experience Juneteenth. Our #WAJ campaign held in June, now has more than 200,000 views across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube.  It clearly demonstrated the creativity and innovative approach of ‘pivoting’ from the talented EPC staff that far exceeded any of our wildest imaginations. They continue their commitment to provide the excellent customer service that you have come to know and expect from the conservancy while remaining in full compliance with all City of Houston directives. I want to take a moment to introduce them to you and the roles they played to ensure the success of the #WAJ campaign.

Patrina Johnson, Sponsorship & Donor Liaison

Iris Garcia, Administration & Outreach Activities

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge and thank our #WAJ sponsors and donors who generously responded to our #WAJ campaign fundraising efforts. August is Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), a global celebration and concerted campaign to elevate Black philanthropy. I hope that you will join me in celebration of BPM by making your donation to Emancipation Park Conservancy, accessing our virtual GeoTourist and sharing it with others.

Until we emerge from the devastating effects of COVID-19, you can continue to expect even more fun, engaging virtual health and wellness, educational, and economic empowerment programs and events.

Remember, we're in this together!

Mayor’s Back to School Fest Presented by Shell

The Mayor’s Back to School Fest Presented by Shell is designed to help economically disadvantaged Houston-area elementary school students and their families as they prepare to return to school. In order to accommodate the growing number of students who need assistance, this year’s event will take place over a two-day period at NRG Park, Yellow Lot on Friday, August 7th and Saturday, August 8th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. While there is much uncertainty during this time, a critical need for assistance with basic school supplies, food, and personal protection equipment for students still remains. The event will be able to help fill in these gaps with a drive-through distribution in partnership with the Houston Food Bank. With the help of many great partners and sponsors, backpacks, school supplies, masks and food will be provided to thousands of elementary students (K-5) and their families, free of charge. Click here to register.

Support EPC During Black Philanthropy Month!

In support of Black Philanthropy Month, we invite you to become a philanthropist and be one of 148 donors to make a monthly recurring gift of $18.72 during the park’s 148th anniversary year. Your monthly gift of $18.72 makes it possible for us to continue to restore, manage and enhance the open space of environmental and community excellence while continuing to preserve the integrity and historical roots of Emancipation Park. Help us reach our goal this August!

Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), observed every August, is a global celebration and concerted campaign to elevate African-decent giving. Created by Jackie Bouvier Copeland, Ph.D. and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet), BPM launched in August 2011 to commemorate the United Nations Year and Decade of People of African Descent. Primary aims of BPM are informing, involving, inspiring and investing in Black philanthropic leadership to strengthen African-American and African-decent giving, in all its forms, for the benefit of our planet, our communities, our organizations and our lives.
